<<timed 00s>> <<replace "#caption">> Yes, we used to have the Mayor's Christmas party, that was his chosen charity. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 08s>> <<replace "#caption">> So, a lot of people, they raised funds all throughout the year. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 13s>> <<replace "#caption">> So, we used to go to where Emirates Stadium was built, that was the Islington Council's transport area, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 23.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> we used to go there and pick a bus, and then I used to, we used to go to all these roads that your <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 30s>> <<replace "#caption">> normal public or normal buses not allowed, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 33.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> and we go there and pick a lot of people up, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 36s>> <<replace "#caption">> and they used to take them all to the place, and they were greeted with cups of tea, and it was really nice, and so many artists gave their time free. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 45.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> They were never bored, and almost everyone got a raffle ticket, and they all won. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 51.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> And I remember we used to raise funds early in the year and make some bags, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 60s>> <<replace "#caption">> a lot of dry food, and <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 62s>> <<replace "#caption">> we used to give it to everybody who came, which was nice. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 65s>> <<replace "#caption">> My husband and I, we stayed the whole day there. We had lunch. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 69s>> <<replace "#caption">> Sometimes we got the Islington Mayor, so it was really lovely. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 75s>> <<replace "#caption">> That's a very special event in my life. And when you are taking these people home, some used to tell me, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 83s>> <<replace "#caption">> you know, we had a really good day today, and if not for this event, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 89s>> <<replace "#caption">> we would have been alone, and that really sort of broke my heart. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 93.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> Some people haven't got family, so it was a, you know, bit of an eye opener. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 97s>> <<replace "#caption">> And, of course, after the event, people went to the pub, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 101s>> <<replace "#caption">> but I had children and <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 103s>> <<replace "#caption">> I don't drink, so no point me going to the pub... <</replace>> <</timed>>

<<timed 00s>> <<replace "#caption">> One of the traditions that they have in Islington, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 04s>> <<replace "#caption">> well, two, one is beating the bounds, which I believe they do every year. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 09s>> <<replace "#caption">> You go around the perimeter of the borough and you do something smack on the gate of whatever it is, or <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 17s>> <<replace "#caption">> hit the milestone at the border of the borough, and you just walk around. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 25s>> <<replace "#caption">> I think it's about a 5-10 mile walk, and when you're finished, you've beaten the bounds. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 29s>> <<replace "#caption">> The other thing that's a lot more fun is when we have a new Mayor every May, because the mayorship revolves around the councillors. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 38.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> That mayor will come out in their full regalia, gold chains and red cloak, and talk to people in various community events that might be happening, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 49.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> just to introduce him or herself to the rest of us. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 55s>> <<replace "#caption">> That's quite old-fashioned in many ways, but they managed to keep up to date because they talk about things that we're interested in, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 60s>> <<replace "#caption">> like housing or violence against women and girls, the issues that of the day, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 66.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> which are important to people in the area. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 69s>> <<replace "#caption">> So, yes, it's sort of a combination of old-fashioned wearing the gold regalia, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 74.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> which probably wouldn't be made these days, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 77s>> <<replace "#caption">> and the red cloak, and talking about modern issues that mean a lot to us, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 80.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> and just coming out and patting kids on the head <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 83.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> like people used to do. <</replace>> <</timed>>

It was very special to me. It was offered to Islington Council, and they said, "We're not that interested." <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 29s>> <<replace "#caption">> Eventually, half of the shunting yard turned into a housing project, council housing, and the other half turned into a nature park, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 39s>> <<replace "#caption">> and the nature park has gone from strength to strength. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 42.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> It has been quietly developed. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 46s>> <<replace "#caption">> One of the big pluses for the nature park, it's got rare orchids and a rare kind of fescue grass, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 53s>> <<replace "#caption">> partly I think because of the acid nature of the soil, probably helped by all the coal that dropped on the ground over 150 years of steam trains. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 62.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> It's a very restful place. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 64s>> <<replace "#caption">> When we had a dog, we could take the dog there, and she loved it. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 68s>> <<replace "#caption">> The same on Parkland Walk, it's secluded, and the sky looks very big when you're there. <</replace>> <</timed>>

<<replace "#caption">> when I arrived, they were, they were desperate for workers, I think, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 108s>> <<replace "#caption">> because I came in and was seen by one of the senior management in housing, and they said, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 115s>> <<replace "#caption">> "Yeah, you sound all right, you can come in, you know, it was a matter then of full employment, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 121s>> <<replace "#caption">> which changed quite dramatically within the council and everywhere else in that way, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 127s>> <<replace "#caption">> because after later in the 60s, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 130.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> suddenly it was all the university graduates were coming in to local government, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 137s>> <<replace "#caption">> and when I joined local government, I was told that I didn't do politics, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 144s>> <<replace "#caption">> but those that followed did, and they thought <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 148s>> <<replace "#caption">> they didn't want to sort of necessarily go by the rules of the local councillors, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 153s>> <<replace "#caption">> who were not necessarily that well educated, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 157s>> <<replace "#caption">> they wanted their own policies sort of pushed through and found it quite sort of a difficult time. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 166s>> <<replace "#caption">> My nicest experience, I suppose, was looking after homeless families. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 174s>> <<replace "#caption">> I sort of started by looking after homeless families, using temporary accommodation for them, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 180s>> <<replace "#caption">> went on, then, to running the reception centres for the homeless families within Islington. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 186s>> <<replace "#caption">> We had half a dozen and <<timed 0s>> <<replace "#caption">> My name is Laurette Josiah, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 2s>> <<replace "#caption">> and I have lived in Islington for 65 years coming next week. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 12s>> <<replace "#caption">> My biggest memory is family, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 14s>> <<replace "#caption">> being in a big family, brothers, sisters, six sisters, seven, including me, then five brothers, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 20s>> <<replace "#caption">> and then the other kids that my mum looked after as well <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 25s>> <<replace "#caption">> Also, there was a big fire in our house when my mom was pregnant with the younger one, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 32s>> <<replace "#caption">> and so there was 11 siblings, and then people living upstairs, because in those days people used to come to this country <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 37s>> <<replace "#caption">> and they used to come into our house, so they'd have a house room with your family, another room with your family, another room with your family, then our family, that would be like that, just so much people, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 47s>> <<replace "#caption">> and I'll actually remember it's the first time I actually tasted fish and chips, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 52s>> <<replace "#caption">> because we were in a.. we were after the fire, the police took us in this blue police van, I remember it, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 57s>> <<replace "#caption">> and we.. there was.. and they took us to get fish and chips, and it was the first time, actually on the paper, because we weren't even allowed to eat food outside, much as eat fish and chips out of paper, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 66s>> <<replace "#caption">> and they took us to this home, this children's home, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 69s>> <<replace "#caption">> and I remember this one was given two rooms, we had to share because there were too many children, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 73s>> <<replace "#caption">> but I remember that time the donations, because it went on the radio and on the TV, the donations that came in from people, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 81s>> <<replace "#caption">> shoes and coats, and there was so much stuff that was donated to us as a family. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 87s>> <<replace "#caption">> I remember that, but growing up as a child, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 91s>> <<replace "#caption">> I thought everyone was like me, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 94s>> <<replace "#caption">> carefree, loving life, brothers, sisters, family, friends, eating, tasting, you know, yeah, food, home-cooked food. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 108s>> <<replace "#caption">> We never did fish and chips. It was like, what, no fish and chips. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 113s>> <<replace "#caption">> It was, it was like rice, chicken, potatoes, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 120s>> <<replace "#caption">> West Indian provisions that she brought over. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 125s>> <<replace "#caption">> School was okay. I remember being at my primary school, St John's School, and <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 130s>> <<replace "#caption">> everybody that went to St John's School had to learn to swim <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 134s>> <<replace "#caption">> because the headmaster, he had his wife and his son died in a boating accident, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 138.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> and I think one of his things that he said, that any child that goes through his school, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 143s>> <<replace "#caption">> they have to learn to swim. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 145s>> <<replace "#caption">> So, everyone that went through St. John's school at my age, we all knew how to swim. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 149s>> <<replace "#caption">> I went to Barnsbury, so all girls' school. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 152s>> <<replace "#caption">> I wasn't a goodie two shoes. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 154.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> It was a bit.. I was a bit.. the thing is, right, I had four siblings who had gone there before me, so they were in the school, so I was quite brave. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 165s>> <<replace "#caption">> I wasn't there, wasn't when you got a sibling in each class, remember you're okay. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 171.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> So I didn't really have much problems in in secondary school, never ever got suspended, or... <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 177s>> <<replace "#caption">> there was, there were, there was stuff there were, there were not, there were fights, but there were more fights between the Greeks and the Turkish people, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 183.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> those types of fights, but there wasn't no fights between blacks and whites, and everything <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 187.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> from different schools, one school to another school, there was that sort of things going on. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 191s>> <<replace "#caption">> Did I like school? Yes. Did I enjoy school? Yes. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 195s>> <<replace "#caption">> Did I make a lot of friends in school? Yes. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 199s>> <<replace "#caption">> Or what were the teachers like? They were okay, there was racism, but I didn't know till later on, which I'm glad I didn't. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 205s>> <<replace "#caption">> And then they had these comics I used to buy every week <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 209s>> <<replace "#caption">> Bunty, Jackie, Ginty, Judy, and used to go in the world, its crazy, the world of the comics, but the stories you used to literally go into those stories and fantasize. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 222s>> <<replace "#caption">> I remember, I remember Jackie, but they were like, for the older kids, you know, fashion dress and hair, but there wasn't geared for black people. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 229s>> <<replace "#caption">> But I didn't know that. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 230.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> I didn't see it, but it wasn't.. there were no pictures of black images, even in the comics. There was none, but I didn't. We didn't see at that time it was like later on, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 246s>> <<replace "#caption">> I think, Islington is a lovely place to live in. It really, really is. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 251s>> <<replace "#caption">> And it's a lovely place to bring your children. I, yeah, brought my kids up in Highbury. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 256s>> <<replace "#caption">> I would probably go on holiday in my house and go on holiday. <</replace>> <</timed>>

<<timed 0s>> <<replace "#caption">> I've worked in Islington for 26 years, doing music, working with different projects and different people. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 9s>> <<replace "#caption">> It's all been community based. I call myself a community musician. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 15s>> <<replace "#caption">> We started off on just doing a Wednesday in a psychiatric hospital near the Whittington. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 21.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> Patients were involved in playing and singing with us, and then staff even have the place, we had a sort of common room. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 30.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> We all went in there together, and then we managed to get an office there, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 36s>> <<replace "#caption">> which was in an old toilet, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 39s>> <<replace "#caption">> so start off basic... and so, then we moved to the new place, the new psychiatric hospital, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 48s>> <<replace "#caption">> which is on Dartmouth Park Hill, and then we're working on wards, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 55s>> <<replace "#caption">> we'd go along and get all the patients involved in that on that particular ward, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 59s>> <<replace "#caption">> we'd play for an hour, and that sort of model continued, you know, for the new place. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 66s>> <<replace "#caption">> We went into 26 million quid, and we got our own office. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 73s>> <<replace "#caption">> This was all music and was funded by the NHS. That went on, we started to do festivals there, three or four a year. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 82s>> <<replace "#caption">> We used to put festivals on at Union Chapel, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 85s>> <<replace "#caption">> so for maybe five years we were doing two or three festivals a year there you know. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 93s>> <<replace "#caption">> I used to play to the homeless at Union Chapel on Sundays and New Year's Eve, so that was special, you know, playing to them at St Stephen's Church, Canonbury Road. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 109s>> <<replace "#caption">> I used to run a singing class, you know, for the homeless for three years. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 115s>> <<replace "#caption">> I moved to Isledon Road, like mental health community center. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 120s>> <<replace "#caption">> We, there was a recording studio there, so this is us playing at the Whittington Hospital, you know, in the big entrance, the atrium. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 128s>> <<replace "#caption">> We played at the mental health side, and we played in the General Hospital. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 132s>> <<replace "#caption">> After I'd done 10 years at Isledon Road, we moved on to Sotheby Centre. I did 16 years of music at Sotheby's. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 145s>> <<replace "#caption">> You know, when Covid came along, I started doing music sessions outdoors in parks and stuff. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 152s>> <<replace "#caption">> So you mentioned Highbury Fields earlier, and we started up there, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 159s>> <<replace "#caption">> and also in Sotheby's garden, they had a lovely garden, and we got a large band, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 166s>> <<replace "#caption">> which is a 13 piece band called the Fairweather Band, and that's it, really. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 172s>> <<replace "#caption">> David Oliver, who sort of founded all this, he's very special. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 177.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> I mean, he's dead now, unfortunately, that he got all of this started, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 184s>> <<replace "#caption">> and it just kind of mushroomed to get the musical charity started. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 190.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> He called it Islington Music Forum, which was a pun on the International Monetary Fund, you know, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 200s>> <<replace "#caption">> same initials, and his kind of inspiration deserved an MBE, really, or an OBE, but which he never got it was unrecognised, really, by people... <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 217s>> <<replace "#caption">> David had a saying, which was a round of applause is worth 1000 tablets, you know, that you, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 225s>> <<replace "#caption">> you don't need to take the tablets just as soon as you hear that applause, you know, then you, you want to, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 233.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> you want to do the music, can you, you know, it helps you to get your life going, you know, get on your feet. <</replace>> <</timed>>

I am 14 years old. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 5s>> <<replace "#caption">> I love to read, I love sports, I love music, and I think I can just find myself doing anything. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 10s>> <<replace "#caption">> And I live in Islington, I live near Holloway. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 14.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> I think I would recommend Holloway. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 17.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> Let's say you walk on Holloway Road, there's just so many different types of cuisines, you're basically traveling the world <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 22s>> <<replace "#caption">> just with a few footsteps, so you just get to open yourself up to a lot of different cultures. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 28.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> They always play music as well. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 30.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> How I would describe Islington to someone who's never been here is loud, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 36s>> <<replace "#caption">> there's always some type of amplified sound, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 40s>> <<replace "#caption">> whether that is someone shouting, someone laughing, someone on the phone, music <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 45s>> <<replace "#caption">> so I would say loud, but not necessarily in a bad way, you know, you just need a bit of sound. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 51s>> <<replace "#caption">> Specifically, in the summer, I would say colourful, and I love when it just, like, everything of like shops and houses, just all the colors, just kind of get in your face, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 62s>> <<replace "#caption">> and I would say it's just a place to do everything, activities, that's how I would put it. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 68s>> <<replace "#caption">> I think there's always something happening in Islington. <</replace>> <</timed>>

<<timed 0s>> <<replace "#caption">> There's this very underrated place to get food. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 4s>> <<replace "#caption">> It's a Lebanese grill shop, and it's underrated outside of Islington, I think. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 11s>> <<replace "#caption">> But the people who live in this area, especially like just around Highbury Fields, know it very well. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 16s>> <<replace "#caption">> And so it's just got like it's really cheap, and it's got really nice food. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 22s>> <<replace "#caption">> I think for seven pounds, you can get like grilled chicken with vegetables and like a wrap, I think. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 29s>> <<replace "#caption">> So it's really nice, and a lot of people go there, and so it kind of feels like an after-school club or something, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 36.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> because you'll always have like around 30 kids in there, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 40s>> <<replace "#caption">> and so it's just has got a really nice like atmosphere. <</replace>> <</timed>>

<<timed 0s>> <<replace "#caption">> Well, I do like the Union Chapel. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 2s>> <<replace "#caption">> I've seen some really good performances there. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 6s>> <<replace "#caption">> I went to see an artist called Laura Cantrell a couple of years ago, and it was great. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 15s>> <<replace "#caption">> I've seen a choir there as well, and it's such a really interesting conversion. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 21s>> <<replace "#caption">> It's the Union Chapel, is actually a religious worship place, but the acoustics are so good that it's just really good for concerts. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 32s>> <<replace "#caption">> Yeah, I'd like to go there more often. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 34s>> <<replace "#caption">> That's a, that's a favorite place of mine as well. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 37s>> <<replace "#caption">> Open mics at the Brewhouse and Kitchen, which is a pub on the ground floor, but on the upper floors, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 46s>> <<replace "#caption">> the upper floor, we have open mics every Monday. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 51s>> <<replace "#caption">> It's the Virtual Acoustic Club, and also they have Islington Folk Club on a Thursday there, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 58s>> <<replace "#caption">> and but the open mic could do with a few more audience members coming along! <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 63s>> <<replace "#caption">> It tends to be just the musicians who turn up to listen to each other, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 70s>> <<replace "#caption">> but nice to have, and then some of the some of the punters come upstairs and listen. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 77s>> <<replace "#caption">> They don't know it's on, you know. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 79s>> <<replace "#caption">> They sometimes they stumble across it, but... <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 83s>> <<replace "#caption">> yeah, I think when people do come up, they're always surprised by the quality of the singing and playing. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 90s>> <<replace "#caption">> It's very enjoyable. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 92s>> <<replace "#caption">> More people should come to the Brewhouse and Kitchen! <</replace>> <</timed>>

We get some good crowds there when we're playing there. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 33s>> <<replace "#caption">> We played there on Sunday, and the Arsenal fans were walking by with, you know, smiles on their faces because we were playing, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 42.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> I think all the special places that I've got are probably you know, from the music. <</replace>> <</timed>>

<<timed 0s>> <<replace "#caption">> When I got older, I used to go to the club scenes. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 2s>> <<replace "#caption">> In, see, there are very different types of clubs, you know. There's clubs that you get the ethnic minorities, the West Indian people going to, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 10s>> <<replace "#caption">> then you've got the clubs English people go to, where they'll play white music, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 15s>> <<replace "#caption">> and then you'll have black music with, you know, reggae music, and that sort of stuff, and everything. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 20s>> <<replace "#caption">> So that was the difference there. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 21.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> So, it depends... and white people did used to come to our clubs, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 27s>> <<replace "#caption">> but if a black person went to their club, there will be a problem, you know. There will be.. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 31s>> <<replace "#caption">> I remember one time I went, it was a pub in Holloway Road, and it was my friend, she's a white girl, it was her wedding, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 40s>> <<replace "#caption">> and after the wedding they went to the pub, I was the only black person, they won't let me in, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 45s>> <<replace "#caption">> and she didn't want to go in, and I said, "No, this is your wedding, you have to go, you know, and it was, it was really, really, it was horrible, you know, that I had to be turned away, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 56s>> <<replace "#caption">> and she cried, and I said, "It's your wedding, I said, "What, what.. no, you have to go". <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 61s>> <<replace "#caption">> That was my really, really first experience of direct racism. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 66s>> <<replace "#caption">> You can't come in here because you are black. <</replace>> <</timed>>

<<timed 0s>> <<replace "#caption">> What I find challenging in Islington, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 4s>> <<replace "#caption">> I would say there's also quite a class divide. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 8s>> <<replace "#caption">> You can see it, it's just right in your face, like you'll just pass a street with semi-detached houses, detached houses, big tall mansions, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 16.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> and then you would see flats, like council flats that aren't kept in the best shape, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 23.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> so I feel like maybe the council may not take care of them properly, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 31s>> <<replace "#caption">> and it's not only class divide, but also there's a lot of things like racism, sexism, all types of bigotry, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 39.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> and that does happen quite a lot, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 45s>> <<replace "#caption">> especially there's like certain times in the news where you would see something would happen <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 50s>> <<replace "#caption">> and it just gets, that anger gets misdirected to innocent people, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 58s>> <<replace "#caption">> which they have nothing to do with, like they have nothing to do with it, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 61s>> <<replace "#caption">> and I'd say that happens a lot. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 64s>> <<replace "#caption">> So it is kind of scary, especially as, like, a person of any minority group, person of color, an immigrant, especially. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 74s>> <<replace "#caption">> I feel like that happens a lot, which also kind of ties a bit into class. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 79s>> <<replace "#caption">> I'd say Euros 2021. That's a moment where I felt there was a lot of divide into people. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 90s>> <<replace "#caption">> Obviously, Saka, I remember him, that was also like, when he was, you know, coming up, so when they had missed the penalties. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 102s>> <<replace "#caption">> England had missed the penalties. It was just kind of like, you know, sirens going into everyone's heads, mostly like black people or just any person of color, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 113s>> <<replace "#caption">> so and there were a lot of people who were mistreating, bullying, attacking mostly black people because of it. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 125s>> <<replace "#caption">> Even though it's football, it's supposed to be fun. I remember going in the street, it was not that safe. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 131.5s>> <<replace "#caption">> Even my family members, they were looking behind their backs, just walking, like you know, walking to the shops, walking to work, <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 143s>> <<replace "#caption">> and they just had to look behind their backs, just because of football. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 147s>> <<replace "#caption">> So, I felt like 2021 Euros, I was a time where I... <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 151s>> <<replace "#caption">> I personally, I think that was one of the biggest times where I was kind of worried about stuff like that. <</replace>> <</timed>>

<<timed 0s>> <<replace "#caption">> I was working in an orchard, in Meadow Orchard in Hornsey, which is a bit further north from here. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 8s>> <<replace "#caption">> I wanted to write something that was positive and cheerful <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 25s>> <<replace "#caption">> Well I’m sitting in an orchard where the apple trees grow. Or I’m listening to a band at a music show. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 37s>> <<replace "#caption">> Or I’m looking at the pictures in a gallery. <</replace>> <</timed>> <<timed 45s>> <<replace "#caption">> When you pass by.
